(Carl) Kim's Story
I am married to classmate Pam Elliott and we celebrated our 57th Anniversary in 2022. I retired in 2008 after 15 1/2 years of teaching 5th grade, a second career for me after 25 years in the corporate business world. Pam is also a retired teacher. While teaching I was co-president of my local teachers association for six years. We have two daughters and a son along with four granddaughters and two grandsons.
We are docents at the Autry Museum of the American West and up until the COVID 19 shutdown we enjoyed touring school groups at the museum. In 2023 we are gradually returning to guiding school groups but the high cost of buses for field trips along with a shortage of funding for schools is limiting our docent activities. In the summer of 2022 I started to become active in the local Sierra Club and am now working with the Angeles Chapter on advocacy of clean transportation projects.
In 2021 we got our COVID booster shots in early September and then set off on a six-week, 6600-mile round trip car excursion to Michigan. The goal was to visit my sister and brother-in-law (Karen and Dave) at their new house in Ann Arbor. They now live on the same street with their daughter Joy, her husband Joe, and Karen and Dave's grandsons, Austin and Ash. Along the way we visited numerous historical and scenic sites including the brilliantly colored plateau-and-canyon...Expand for more
country of the Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction, the Overland Trail Museum in Sterling, Colorado, and the Old Spanish Trail Interpretive Center at Fort Uncompahgre in Delta, Colorado. We tried to travel on secondary roads whenever possible and stop frequently to take in the sights and culture of small-town America. Both going and returning, we took time to visit friends in Minneapolis and Green Bay, and our granddaughter, Caroline, who recently moved to Columbus, Ohio. We also stopped at my birthplace in Champaign, Illinois (where I hadn't been since age 2) and visited my parents' home town in Atlantic, Iowa, as well as my grandmother's birthplace in Maryville, Missouri - including her former farm in nearby Pickering, Missouri where I spent two summers at age 11 and 12. We returned along "Old Route 66" through the Southwest. It was great to be "on the road again," and while we were glad to get back home in mid-October, we felt newly energized by the experience.
We continue to stay in touch with long-time friends from our Peace Corps India days (1965 to 1967) and attend bi-annual reunions with our group in different areas of the U.S. The planned 2020 reunion in Albuquerque, NM was cancelled because of COVID 19 and rescheduled for 2021. We also attend reunions and Homecomings at San Jose State and with Pam's former roommates at U.C. Berkeley.
